PV Cleaning Technology – from Bavaria to the deserts of Dubai

Press releases

Shuaa Energy 1 cleans Solar Park with SunBrush System

Memmingen, Germany 22th February 2017: Sunbrush mobil GmbH, a provider of cleaning systems for building facades and the photovoltaic sector, has sold four of its PV cleaning solutions to the project company, Shuaa Energy 1. The company will deploy them in the Seih Al-Dahal desert in Dubai.

At the end of 2016, the company from the German state Bavaria sent four of its SunBrush cleaning systems by truck and then ship to Dubai. As soon as the systems arrived the new owners were given training in how to operate them. Once the settings had been calibrated to the specific parameters of the PV installation and a technical briefing and operator training had taken place, the solution went live. Since then, the four brush-systems, mounted on tractors, have been cleaning the 200 MW solar power plant, comprising First Solar thin-film modules.

Performance equivalent to twenty washes by hand

“With photovoltaic power plants such as the one in Dubai, cleaning systems are particularly important,” explains Franz Ehleuter, Managing Director at Sunbrush mobil GmbH. “One of our machines delivers the equivalent performance of about twenty washes by hand, with a consistent cleaning quality, while enabling an air-conditioned workplace. The entire power plant has a capacity of some 200 MW. As soon as a cleaning run is completed, the next one begins, enabling our customer to achieve the highest possible electricity yields.”

The cleaning brushes are mounted in a boom system and are made from a UV-resistant plastic (Polyethylene) that was specifically developed for the cleaning of glass. This guarantees a long lifespan while at the same time preventing damage to the solar modules. Thanks to its flexibility, many different types of vehicles are suitable for carrying the washsystem to the modules and then operating it.

The systems can, for example, be hydraulically operated from a standard tractor, digger, or telescopic loader. Conversions or structural modifications of the carrier vehicle are not necessary. The boom is able to adjust to meet any of the topographic and technical challenges provided by solar parks. The actual cleaning process is controlled from a joystick. Following an initial one-time calibration, the setting of the surface pressure on the module is fully automated. If the operator wishes to use the system at another location, then the use of water in the cleaning process is also possible.
